The Oxford English Dictionary gives no definition of Tafsir.
Tafsir (exegesis) – which means discovery of something hidden in Arabic – refers to the tradition of commentary carried out to understand the Quran.

Term Variants: Tafseer, Tafsir

How this term should be used

The word tafsir should not be used in isolation, without explaining its meaning as a commentary or interpretation of (a part of) the Quran that is the opinion of the author.

There are many commentaries or interpretations of the Quran, with areas of agreement and disagreement amongst the scholars.

Tafsir may have legal or theological applications and is a way of making the Quran “meaningful to new generations of adherents.” [1] The Prophet Muhammad is considered the “most authoritative” interpreter of the Quran. [2]
