How this term should be used
We recommend either ‘Quran’ or ‘Qur’an’ as spelling options. ‘Koran’ is seen by Muslims as incorrect.
Muslims believe that the Quran contains the direct speech of God, as revealed to His final Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) between 610 and 632 CE. It comprises 114 surahs (chapters) and each sura is divided into ayaat (s. ayah, verses).
The Quran is the ultimate authority on all religious matters and is the primary source for guidance on matters of ethics, procedure and jurisprudence.
Initially memorised and transmitted orally by the Prophet’s companions, the written book was compiled under the direction of the third caliph Uthman, after the death of the Prophet.
