Iddah
A period of time during which a divorced or widowed woman may not remarry, originally observed in order to ascertain if a child was conceived prior to divorce or widowhood (and as a mourning period in the latter instance).

How this term should be used
Iddah or iddat is a term which will likely be used in relation to women’s rights and obligations. The safest and technically correct use of the term should be as outlined above.
The period of Iddah after a divorce is three lunar months, and after the death of a spouse is four lunar months and ten days. If it is discovered that the woman is pregnant during her iddah, then the child is the responsibility of the former husband should he be living. In this case the period of iddah is extended until the mother gives birth or the pregnancy comes to an end. Women have the right to observe iddah in their former husband’s house.
