A Muslim who knows the Qur’an by heart.
Term Variants: Hafidh, Hafiz, Hafiza, Hifdh, Hifz
Hafiz is an honorific title obtained by someone and a brief description in brackets next to this could be included when listing such an individual. Note: Hafiz or Hafeez is also a name given to boys so this should not be confused with someone who has the title. The memorisation of an entire book would be considered impressive and newsworthy in many contexts and similarly more news stories on those who achieve such a distinction should be welcome.
Hafiz is the masculine singular; Hafiza is the feminine singular. Huffaz is the plural. Hifz refers to the act of memorising the Qur’an.
To memorise the Qur’an is considered a profound accomplishment. Any Muslim who memorises the Qur’an in its entirety is obliged to ensure that they do not forget it.
