Dajjal / Maseeh al-Dajjal
Maseeh al-Dajjal is the Arabic term for The False Messiah.
Often shortened to al-Dajjal or Dajjal (the Deceiver, the liar).
How this term should be used
The most simple and orthodox understanding of Dajjal being a False Messiah OR Deceiver as detailed in the Hadith literature is the best and safest description. Dajjal or Maseeh al-Dajjal is a term that has been used more frequently than in the past particularly with the launch of the Netflix drama Messiah in 2019.
Whilst orthodox understandings of Dajjal are of a human being, recent interpretations have also included an eco-system, particularly digital mediums designed to distract and deceive human beings. The Arabic translation of Dajjal means deceiver. Explainers around the conflict in the Middle East and the belief around the status of the Al Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem are likely to include the mention of Dajjal.
In Islamic eschatology, Maseeh al-Dajjal (The False Messiah), often shortened to al-Dajjal (the Deceiver) is the prophesied Antichrist [1] who will appear during the age of injustice before the end of the world. His appearance will be followed by a period of oppression. Sunni Muslims believe that he will eventually be defeated by the Prophet Isa (Jesus), who will return to Earth for this purpose. This event will usher in an age of peace. [2]
