How this term should be used
Al- Fatiha (The Opening) is the first chapter of the Quran and the one most widely memorized by Muslims. It is recited in each unit of ritual prayer, and some Muslims read it to pray for the deceased and to bless the union of marriage.
Al- Fatiha (The Opening) consists of seven verses:
1. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
(Bismillāhi -raḥmāni r-raḥīm)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
2. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
(Al ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-’ālamīn)
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds
3. الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
(Ar raḥmāni r-raḥīm)
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
4. مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
(Māliki yawmi d-dīn)
Master of the Day of Judgment
5. إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
(Iyyāka na’budu wa iyyāka nasta’īn)
It is You whom we worship, and it is You whom we ask for help
6. اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
(Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm)
Guide us to the straight path.
7. صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ
(Ṣirāṭ al lazi na an’amta ‘alayhim, ġayril maġḍūbi ‘alayhim walāḍ ḍāllīn)
The path of those who have earned Your blessing, not the path of those who have incurred Your wrath and gone astray.
