In Islamic eschatology, Jahannum refers to hell, the place of eternal fire to which evildoers and unbelievers are banished on the Day of Judgment.
Jahannum should be referred to as hell in English. Jahannum is a direct counterpart of Jannah, the Islamic paradise that awaits those whom Allah deems to have been righteous.
The Quran and Hadith contain vivid descriptions of the punishments of hell, although a minority of some commentators interpret these as metaphorical, most Muslims accept them as a fact of the next life.
